What We Do

We support informal waste reclaimers through equipment, training, and inclusive recycling systems.

Why should you support informal waste reclaimers?

Reclaimers play a key role in recycling but are often excluded from formal systems. Supporting them strengthens the circular economy while tackling poverty, unemployment and inequality.

We work directly with reclaimers through practical, community-based solutions that create jobs, especially for youth and women, and improve local waste systems.

How effective is our equipment & support?

Reclaimer awareness & Community Upliftment!

Equipment, Clothing & PPE

  • Branded trolleys and PPE give reclaimers dignity, safety, and visibility in public spaces.
  • Good equipment helps reclaimers feel respected and part of an organised recycling system.
  • Uniformed reclaimers are more accepted, improving access to higher-value recyclable waste.
  • Sponsorship builds brand visibility and value through real, on-the-ground social impact.

Recycling Sorting & Baling Hubs

  • Sorting, baling, shelter, toilets, waste removal, off-take deals, and EPR rebate access.
  • Camps are fully managed with PRO support and sponsor funding.
  • Baling with off-take agreements significantly increase reclaimer’s income.
  • Higher earnings provide more stable income for reclaimers and their families.

Micro Recycling Pods

  • Enabling landfill reclaimers to upcycle and densify their waste plastic, delivering circular plastics back into the economy.
  • MRPs empower the reclaimers to recycle and upcycle waste plastic so that they can make a living.
  • Providing direct and indirect jobs in the community, creates revenue streams for the collectors of plastic waste.

Corporate Waste Solutions

  • Urban Surfer offers Corporate Waste Management Solution, that harnesses the power of a vast micro reclaimer network, transforming waste collection into a vehicle for social and economic empowerment.
  • Support informal waste reclaimers by managing your recyclable waste through our reclaimer waste management value proposition.

Festivals & Events Recycling & Reporting

  • Informal Reclaimers lead the work: Trained reclaimers sort all waste on-site, gaining direct income and recognition for their contribution.
  • Social and environmental benefit: Events like the Corona Sunsets Festival keep tons of material out of landfill while creating livelihoods.
  • Transparent reporting: After each event, we provide a full recycling report that shows exactly how much was collected, sorted, and diverted.

Training & Support

  • Reclaimers face stigma, unsafe work, harassment, mental heath issues and middleman exploitation.
  • We offer reclaimers structured, on-site training and ongoing support.
  • We train reclaimers in basic health, safety, and financial management.
  • We address mental health through direct training and partner-led support programmes.

Community Initiatives

  • Clean-ups shift public perception, connecting reclaimers and communities through shared goals.

  • Associate your brand with community upliftment, actioned by your supported reclaimers.

  • Community work offers reclaimers added income beyond daily recycling activities.

GPS Waste Collection Tracking

Why GPS Tracking

  • Reclaimers use GPS-enabled trolleys to log collection, sorting and sales activity.
  • Track location, volume and value of recyclables collected by reclaimers.
  • Reporting on brand penetration & coverage.
  • GPS tracking supports safety and accountability in public areas.
  • Data is logged and shown in our live reporting platform.

Project Reporting Application

  • Live platform tracking project impact, reclaimer progress, and sponsor visibility.
  • We measure and document all aspects of informal recycling on the project.
  • Reports are hosted online and accessible to sponsors at any time.

About Us

Urban Surfer supports informal waste reclaimers with the tools, infrastructure and partnerships they need to earn a stable income and be recognised for their role in recycling.

We operate community-based recycling hubs, provide equipment like trolleys and PPE, offer training and support, and track impact through smart digital tools. Our work is focused on dignity, belonging, and shared value, especially for women and youth reclaimers.

Through partnerships with corporates, municipalities and producer responsibility organisations, we link reclaimers to higher-value waste streams and create practical, inclusive recycling solutions that benefit people and the environment.

OUR MISSION

To give informal waste reclaimers a sense of belonging, dignity, and sustainable income. To support the right to a healthy environment and improved wellbeing for all.

OUR GOAL

To increase reclaimer income through equipment, training, support, and local initiatives, while improving waste systems and contributing to broader economic growth.

THE RESULT

Bradley Du Chenne

COO, Telesure Investment Holdings

Urban Surfer presented their initiatives when I started working at the department. We endorse their solutions and I am also grateful to Hippo for investing in waste pickers. We don’t have quality information on what waste pickers are doing so the data gathered  will help me with my planning & projections as well as helping national government.

Palesa Mathibeli

Director of Waste Management, Gauteng Provincial Government

As the city of Joburg we appreciate and endorse what Urban Surfer is doing to improve the lives of waste pickers. We aim to come on board with Urban Surfer to increase the number of supported and registered waste pickers and provide them with protective clothing and training.

Mvuselelo Mathebula

Head of Waste Policy & Regulation, City of Johannesburg

I would like to thank Hippo for what they have done for us. Now we are able to put food on the table because of these trolleys. Companies now trust us because of these trolleys. I am no longer chased away and I have better access to recyclables. I would like Hippo to continue helping us. Thank-you Hippo.
